Polk Salad FestivalMay 12, 2012 @ 10:00am - 06:00pm
The Tennessee "Polk Salad" Festival and Pageant is an annual event held the 2nd Saturday in May to celebrate summer with food, live bluegrass music & entertainment, cooking and talent contests, and of course poke salet for tasting.
The Miss Polk Salad pageant is usually held for ages 17-27 years old in the park gazebo at 4 pm.
David Webb, owner of the Rocky Top General Store and sponsor for the festival & pageant, came up with the idea of a "Polk Salad" Festival from memories of his younger days. He wanted to honor his mother, who was known for helping him bag poke (and yes, the festival name was mispelled on purpose) in a brown paper bag (or 'poke) and sell it for a dime a bag. His mother was known as Granny Webb (her real name was Violet Webb). She used to make lye soap at Harriman's local events while she sang old folk songs that her mama taught her. She talked often of the old time ways and the natural foods that are good for you and their natural medicinal purposes.
