Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery

Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery

The fish hatchery has a half-mile long, paved walking trail adjacent to the creek and provides visitors with an opportunity to exercise and bird watch.  Operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior, this National Fish Hatchery was established to mitigate for fishery resources which were lost due to the construction of federal water development projects in the Southeast.   This is accomplished by stocking rainbow, brown, lake, and brook trout in waters impacted by federal dams.  Warmwater species of fish, displaced by dam construction, are on display in the aquarium/visitor center.

Things to Do at the Fish Hatchery

Bird Watching

There is a half-mile long, paved walking trail adjacent to the creek and provides visitors with an opportunity to exercise and to bird watch. The hatchery attracts Great Blue Herons, Belted Kingfishers, and Little Green Herons. The field adjacent to the hatchery attracts Tree Swallows, Rough- winged Swallows, and Blue Birds. The forested area surrounding the walking trail attracts numerous species, including Yellow-throated Warblers, Cedar Waxwings, Pine Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets.

The fish hatchery is open to visitors from 7am - 3pm for tours. It's interesting to see the fish they have in stock and learn about their process of stocking many of the lakes and rivers in the Southeast. Visitors can view trout at various life stages in indoor tanks and outdoor raceways.
